What kind of products can the Expat Desk offer me?

Expatriates in the Netherlands can enjoy our full range of banking services; from checking products and savings products to mortgages and insurances. Please contact our Expat Desk for more information. Some restrictions do apply.

What do I need to bring with me when I want to open an account?

Please bring the following documents with you:

1)       Your passport or identity card

2)       Labour contract

3)       Rental agreement

4)       BSN (if available)

BSN: personal public service number

Everybody in the Netherlands has a registration number: the personal public service number (burgerservicenummer, BSN). This number is issued to Dutch citizens with their birth certificate. If you arrive in the Netherlands at a later date, you have to apply for the number yourself.

How do I get a BSN?
As a foreigner you will receive a BSN when you register with the municipality (gemeente). Where you register is dependent on the reason for your visit:

  • if you have come to the Netherlands as a highly skilled migrant, then you can arrange your registration at the Expatcenter. Your number will then be posted to you.
  • if you are not in the Netherlands as a skilled migrant, then you can arrange your BSN at the same time as you register with the Municipality .
  • do you work in the Netherlands, but don't live here? Then you must apply to the Tax and Customs Administration in Heerlen for a BSN.

Can I open a bank account without an BSN (Burger Service Number)?

Yes, you can. Eventually we will need to see the BSN, but this can be postponed for 4-6 weeks after opening your account. We will however, still need to see a labour agreement from your employer in the Netherlands.

What will happen if I do not show my BSN after four weeks?

Once the account is opened we will monitor the account. After four weeks we will send you a reminder to check on the status of your BSN. If no further information is provided the account will eventually be closed.

What is an IBAN code?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number and is a number attached to all bank accounts in the EU countries plus Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland. An IBAN code is not a new account number, but a new format for an existing bank account number that is recognized internationally.

Where can I find my IBAN code?

The IBAN code associated with your bank account is printed on your bank statements. It is also available when you log in for online banking. You can also contact the Rabobank Expat Desk at 020 - 777 80 80 and they will confirm your IBAN number. Or check the IBAN yourself by visiting the following site (http://www.ibanbic.nl/iban/ServletController)

What is a BIC and/or SWIFT?

A BIC (Bank Identifier Code) is an easy way of identifying the beneficiary's bank. SWIFT (Society for Worldwide International Financial Transactions) owns and administers the BIC system. The BIC is the same as the bank's SWIFT address. For example the BIC/SWIFT of Rabobank Netherlands is RABONL2U.

Why should I use the IBAN and BIC?

Using the IBAN of the beneficiary makes it easier and faster to process international payments. Also, when using the IBAN and BIC/SWIFT together for payments inside the EU countries plus Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland, Rabobank will not charge you a transfer fee. Using the IBAN only, Rabobank will charge you EUR 5,- per transaction.

What do I have to do if I lose my bank card?

Go to any Rabobank in Amsterdam with identification and apply for a new card. Rabobank will block your current card and apply for a new card which you will receive approximately four working days later.

Can I change my pincode?

Unfortunately not. The pincode given to you is the code you have to use. It is not possible to change the code.

If you do not remember your PIN code you will need to order a new one by visiting any Rabobank in Amsterdam with identification or call the expat desk.
